Analysis of nine shots from The Art of the Title Sequence - 'Mission Impossible'
Published Saturday, 6 March 2010 by CANDIMEDIA in Ezgi Albay
Mission Impossible 3 (also known as M:I:III) was an Action / Thriller film made by One of the Big Sixes - Paramount. The film stars Tom Cruise (Ethan Hunt) as the main character of all series!
In this nine shot title sequence picture, we see titles. The font style used is Serif. This font style is generally more traditional and often slightly more formal than sans serif fonts. The reason why Serif font was used would be because it is more of a 'serious' film rather than 'comfortable, comedy' for it to be Sans Serif. The titles say the producation company followed by a picture, then Tom Cruises name and in the last shot it has the films name. The titles are clearly writen in white, and becomes an extreme close-up with a light blue colour, which may emphasise a lot about what will happen within the film. Such as, the storyline becoming tense and extremely close to tension, as the writing almost gets uncomfortablely close!
The use of colours are mostly dark, apart from the white used for the titles. The nine shot title sequence picture gives the audience a clear breif for what the film is about. There is a picutre of an explotion / fire, main characters face, techniqal machines (computering) and another explotion. This all shows us that the film is some kind of investigation - refering to the title 'Mission'!
All the images are slightly close (mid-shot) or close-ups! The camera use changes a lot for the title sequence.
The last shot is the films name in a black background, which is generally prefered to used at title sequences. This is to keep the films name in the audiences mind as it is clear. The word 'impossible' is in the form as if its been stamped onto the surface, which makes it slightly different from many of the other title sequences!
