Font Analysis

All films have a font style used for the title sequence and main title on posters and billboards etc. There are two types of fonts. These are:

  • Serif
  • Sans Serif

Serif fonts are different from Sans Serif fonts because they tend to be more formal and traditional. The basic and also one of the main Serif font is Times. Serif fonts look more formal compared to Sans Serif fonts as these fonts have a slight 'stroke' on each letter.

The Untouchables was a film based on the (crime, drama and historical thriller) genre. A Paramount Pictures film, 1987. The film starrs Kevin Costner, Sean Connery & Robert De Niro.
The font used for the film is 'Perpetua'. This is a Serif font style. This font is used because it gives the film a serious and formal categorie. The title is written in full capital letters, which gives a sence of a masculine character, big, bold and formal.

Sans Serif fonts are less formal compared to the Serif fonts. They are more curvy, bold and modern - informal writing! A common Sans Serif font style is Comic Sans.

The Young Victoria was a film that was out not very long ago. Its a 2009, GK film. They've recieved an oscar for 'Best costume design!' The film has a mix of genres, however the main genre is 'romance & drama.' The font style for this film is Sans Serif which is called 'Avenir'. The font is Sans serif although its a film based on a historical lifestyle. Both Serif and Sans Serif could go along to the films font style. I believe that Sans serif was chosen as it looks more modern and feminine!

Since we've now finished our rough cut for our title sequence, I've come across a situation were i thought re-filming some shots would make our film better considering the fact that there was hardly any good lighting and camera angles in our rough cut. It isn't the editing skills we need to work on, its the actual filming that would make our rough cut look more professional.

  • One of the first things that we would be changing from our rough cut would be the studios name would be changed instead of being promoted on a simple white handwriting.

  • This shot needs to be changed into a close - up to make the audience have a clear idea of what is needed to be seen and watch for the following scenes interests. The shot would look more dramatic and less simple if it became a close up, it would also have more affect on the audience.

  • This shot looks too bright compared to the other shots so i think we need to saturate the shot and it would make the scene look better, and even effect the whole title sequence if it was a extreme long shot because it would have an effect of point of view shot and creepy due the character being alone in a forest. The dog would be taken out to make the shot look more dramatic and add emotion. This is because with the dog, the audience may feel laid back thinking, the dog would look out and keep the girl away from any how. However, if the dog is out of these shots, the audience are likely to worry more than this shot that is actually in the rough cut. This shot that's in the rough cut so far almost looks as though its just a random scene of a girl walking on some grass around some trees!

  • This shot shows one the one of the two characters in the title sequence which is the fortune teller. In this shot, she gets a scruffy piece of paper and starts writing. The shot just goes on and on, without any movement with the camera, just very little zooming. This shot has to be shortened not to bore the audience with a scene of a women writing for ages - were the audience are not even aware of what is been written.

  • Lastly i think that the forest scenes look abit too light, although the the fortune telling shots are too dark! Even if we didn't want it to match, i think its too light for a thriller movie. I think this shot either needs to be re-filmed at a better location and better lighting, or edited on final cut pro by playing with the levels!

For this session, we learnt how to use the camera properly and safely. We were shown how to work the camera and trun it on and off. Alos, we learnt what buttons to press.

We used a tripod, to make it looks more professional and not shakey - which looks like an ametuer holding the camera, if so. But, we had to make sure that there was a 'click' sound, so that it was in securely and it wouldn't fall down..!

There was different ways of using the camera - you could use different shots; over0the-shoulder, mid shot, close up etc. We also lerant the basic things such as zooming in and out, have the memory card put in properly, the battery in, and that it was all working well and proper.

Also, we learnt that we musn't eat or drink when near the camera because it could harm it. And to make sure that someone was always besides the camera by all times, so no-one trips over.

However, if we were to be filiming outside, we have to make sure that someone was next to you when filming, because the people might cause trouble or something.

We also leant how to hold the camera - with or without a tripod - correctly and to make sure that we didn't cut a essential part of the scene or that it didn't make sense - otherwise, the audience wouldn't understand what was going on exactly!

Another thing is that we shouldn't be too close to the camera and to make sure you know what to do, before you do it.

If you do film outside, you have to make sure that it was safe and there was a fair amount of people. (it shouldn't be too dark and very few people, because then it wouldn't be safe...). But if anyone does approach you, then we shouls call someone, like a parent, teacher or worse case scenerio, police....

Ryan, 3...murdered by the childminders.

A little bot of three died after sustaining more than SEVENTY injuries at the hands of his brutal childminders.

This was written in the Sun's paper last Saturday. This was also on the news as well, but briefly.

As the headings mention, a poor little boy was killed. His name was Ryan Lovell-Hacox, and his murderers were called: Kayley Boleyn and boyfriend Christopher Taylor (both 19), they were on alcohol probation.

This tory would work really well for a thriller movie, because it could create alot of suspense. It could start off with Kayley and Christopher just coming out of court, free. The judge thought that they would not be in jail, because they pleaded not guilty or something. But then, it goes back to them all smirking and going off quickly.
Then it could show Ryan playing in his local park, with his mum and dad all happy and laughinh. But, it could be filmed in the bushes, to make it seem that Kayley and Christtopher is watching them, but a bit drunk.
Then, it could show Ryan's mum and dad needing to go somewhere, but needing a childminder. So, Kayley can come up to their house and introduce herself. They like her and give her the job. So, she babysits Ryan regulary. However, his parents don't know that she's bringing aroud her boyfriend...
Then it could show them two getting really drunk and 'off their heads' and do things to the baby, without realising it.
However, eventually, when his parents notice, it's too late...

I think it would create suspense because the viewer would know what kind of people Kayley and Chris is, but of course, the parents don't. Also, by showing a happy innocent child puts in alot of suspense because you wouldn't want anything to happen to him, when clearly knowing something will.
But his parents notice that he's not smiling anymore and is more secretive - if only they knew what was going on...!

For this, we were in groups and we had to watch a different film and analyis it. Our group had 'Panic Room'. We had to watch it a few times, and then write what comes in order and when. We had to see how it started - it was a plain background, followed by the narrative opening.
The way ot started was really interesting, because it was all above the buildings or high up the buildings in America. The front of writing was sharp and it didn't have anything fancy. It was done as if it was a sign on a building, which indicates that it has something to do with that. Also, it looked like it was popped out from somewhere with an zooming effect. This shows that the film might be fast paced and you get the sense of a chase of some sort. By showing high buildings especially, it might suggest it has something to do with criminals and police.
However, throughout the opening, there was this music in the background, which had a calm but eerie feel to it, which shows that somwthing is going to happen, and soon.

A while back, we watched a thriller film called: 'United 93'. It was about a hijack on a plane, when the 9/11 happened in Manhattan a few years ago. It created suspense because they always shown the hijackers again and again, and how they were saying 'We have to do this now' repeatedly. They showed alot of close-ups of the men, and their hands.
Also, by keeping the suspense running, you'd almost not think that othing's going to happen, but it does when you least expect it.
They showed how they put the bomb together and how they put the guns in their pockets. Then, when they bursted out in front of the people, they made sure that no-one left and had a gun in their hands all the time. It also created suspense when they killed the pilots and flew themselves, putting a picture of their target in front of them. Because they were shouting in a different language (Arabic), it made more suspense because you couldn't understand that language (if you don't speak it, of course) and it made it more tense because the people on board of the plane had no idea what was going to happen next.
Also, another thing is that the camera work was shaky, to indicate that the viewer was in the moment as well, so you could reaaly feel for the people and feel scared as well. There was alot of close ups, to show how the people were feeling and that how they kept showing the guns and bombs over and over again.
Also, when it went silent, you knew that something wouoold happen, because everything was in slow motion.

Rough Cut Evaluation

The rough cut of our thriller title sequence is not very much like what our final edited title sequence would be but most of the things are related to the final draft. We used Final Cut Pro to edit our shots and bring them altogether, add any effects etc to create our rough cut.
This is because of many disadvantages we came across during filming:

We firstly arranged to film at one of our group friends house far from college at Walthamstow, the problem with this was the case that we had to leave college late, therefore due to Walthamstow being a long way from the college, we were at our film location around 6 o'clock which was the times where it got dark in the room and lighting's were not enough and the lighting provided like a clear spot light which didn't make anything look good, so we couldn't film shots with clear lighting. Due to being in a predicament, we had to film once again at another location where it was closer to the college so we could have guaranteed the problem of lighting! Therefore, we decided to go to another group mates house, this time every prop we needed, we had. The location was good aswell, but once again, unhappily, there was a problem as the room was slightly small to film in. This caused countless amounts of problems as i was unable to move the camera around comfortably. There wasn't even much room for the tripod to be placed. For this reason, we couldn't get the shots and camera angles that we wanted which made the rough cut look very low budget and low quality! Lastly we decided to film in the colleges studio, which had a lot of lighting and good facilities and we also went to Finsbury park to film the forest shots. We then finally had our filming finished!

However, although it took us longer to finish our filming, i believe that this rough cut wasn't that bad if the camera angles were to be correct. We could have just played with the colours, hue-saturation or saturate etc and make it look even more creepier suiting our supernatural thriller genre. This means and clearly gave us a good understanding of what should and what shouldn't be done while filming, where to film and how to film. I see it as an experience rather than being such a big dis advantage and disappointment!
Our rough cut has the shots and scenes of our original storyboard, and so will our final draft. The uniqueness about our final cut would be that it has better camera angles and lighting.

In general, our rough cut contains the main things that were asked from us. It has various shots, camera angles and movements. It has been fun and the filming was enjoyable for me. Also i think that the final draft would be good because of the help with the rough cut!

This is the storyboard for our coursework film, there are 23 shots in total, with the final one just being a shot of a black background with the title, 'The Reading', in white letters. We think this will be effective after the opening as it will hit the audience right in the face really fast after the built up suspense.
Our film is going to be filmed in two different locations, so we will have to be careful with the editing to make sure it doesn't look jumpy or anything.
We tried to use a variety of shot types, these include;
- Shaky cam, for when the victim is running away from the mysterious person in the grass to create a sense of panic.
- Close ups of the victim's expressions, especially when the death card is laid to convey the fear to the audience
- Extreme close ups of the fortune teller's eye to scare the audience.
- Long shots of the forest, to establish the location is deathly quiet.

Location Shots

Suiting our storyline, we had to choose a appropriate set to film our thriller title sequence. Due to having quite a few fortune telling scenes, we decided to film in the colleges studio. 'City & Islington 6th form college'! The reason why we chose this setting is because, we had a couple distractions with a small bedroom before, therefore we had to film somewhere else where we had more space and lighting! I personally consider this as an advantage rather than a disadvantage, reasons being because we wouldn't have known that we had to get more props and needed more angles for the camera, which means more space at the location that we were filming. We filmed inside one of the classrooms within the college that is generally used as a studio! The room was fairly large and has tables and chairs, a lot of lighting and curtains. Once all these things matched the props as well, everything was ready to film and this meant that the first half of our filming was over. This was really easy and practical to use. It wasn't "careless" or less advantaged, i believe oppositely it was much better and had a higher quality with many more technical support!

The second and last location for our filming was a park which had a lot of greenery and trees around to create a creepy look. We decided to film at 'Finsbury Park' which is a park close the 'Finsbury Park Station - on the Piccadilly & Victoria line'! We filmed in daylight in both locations. We chose Finsbury park as our second location because it has a big greenery area which means we can have a lot of extreme long shots that look dramatic and mysterious benefiting the thriller genre.

In this lesson, me and my group friends were told to create a mini title sequence. This was to practise using the camera and everything else that we learnt in the health and safety lesson. We were told to film a simple sequence with a match-cut while walking into a room - from the door, just after walking through the corridor. Then sitting across or standing across somebody and having a little conversation / dialogue amongst one another.
We made a simple story board about what we wanted to film for our practise title sequence, then we started to film. This helped us to improve our camera skills in many ways.
We learnt how to work on the camera:
  • Shots
Long, Mid, Close-Up, Extreme Close-Up, Extreme Long Shot
  • Angles
Birds eye view, Worms eye view, Over shoulder, Straight eye-level
  • Movements
    Tracking, Panning etc.

In our filming we have used a match cut were one of my group friends walk into a room (closing the door behind her), over shoulder shots, mid-shots, close-ups and more.

Camera work is really important in filming because every little detail can change the way everything set out. The camera work is also as strong and important as the mise-en-scene in filming because every shot, angles and movement can mean something different to the audience if it isn't used correctly.

To improve our short clip we could have made a good shot reverse shot and extreme close-ups. This short clip has helped us because it has given us a taste of how it would be to film and we also know what more we can do to improve and make our work look even better.

In general i think we done quiet good for a first attempt in our filming and we now have a good idea of what we would be doing and its made things easier because we are now clearer on what kind of shots we need to take and the exact things we need to do. Preparation makes perfect!

Live Type:

Live Type is the programme we would be using to create our title. It is a useful and unique programme as it lets us to create our titles in the style we want it to be. There are a variety of font styles and sizes that we can choose from. There are many affects that are available for the way that the words come in and out. I personally think that our group would be using Serif as our font style, because it is slightly more formal and suitable.

Sound Track Pro:
Sound Track Pro is a software created for us to be able to make our own music. This programme is also very useful because it has countless amount of sound effects and noises and beats which we could just drag into the timeline to make our own music. We can use many layers to make each sound go on top to make a professional sounding, orchestral sound track.

Storyboard analysis

My teacher told me and my group to make a storyboard for our Thriller Title Sequence, therefore we made a quick sketch of what we would like our title sequence to look like. In the storyboard i wrote about:
  • The order of shots
  • Types of shots used (camera angels, camera shots, camera movements)
  • Props
  • Setting
  • Sound effect / Music
  • What happens in the actual shot!

This storyboard gives us an idea of what we would be filming and once again is another technique of preparation. As we film, we may want to change a couple shots to make the title sequence look better. Other than that i think this storyboard is quite good for our group!

We planned our title sequence and have decided to make a supernatural thriller genre based title sequence. We would be shooting scenes of a future teller / phycic women who clearly knows a lot about what will be happening to the 'victim', which would be the girl that goes to the future teller. Were planing to film in a forest aswell, this would be flash-forward scences from the film. Suspence would be throughtout the whole of our title sequence!

Analysis of 9 shots from Art of Title Sequence.

The opening of The Matrix starts with a computer, zooming in, into numbers that 'fall' like the rain. Its all digitalised to create he effect that it
's computer based and that it has something to do with the computer.

The background is black, to create a really eerie dark look to it. However, the raining numbers are in bright green, so it stands out. Also it looks like there's a reflection, so it's overlaping the numbers.
There's a lot of zooming in and different angles, to make it seems that the viewer is somewhat on a rollercoaster, twisting and turning.
The sounds they do is like something zooming passed, so you get the feel that it's fast pace and perhaps it's to do with chasing.
The name of the starts come up one by one, a if it's being typed on the computer.
But when the names of te production company comes up, it's 'written' in different places, to make it seem more interesting and almost as if your searching for the names.

Them, at he end of the sequence, 'The Matrix' comes up. However, even though it's like it's typed up, all the other numbers disappear so its just a black background with the green writng.

'Don't blame facebook for this teenage tragedy'

This is one of the headlines in the London evening standard newspaper.

I was shocked to find that a 17 year old girl, Ashleigh Hall was raped a murdered
by a man names Peter Chapman who posed as a teenager and persauded her to meet him.

The story is incredibly tragic and awful but would make an thrilling thriller movie.
It could be about a rapist who lures teenage girls in only to murder them and agents on the hunt for this man. Sort of something like "The lovely bones" except less philosophical and fantasy but more haunting.

First day filming

The first day of filming was on a Tuesday, we had booked the cameras and decided to meet outside Walthamstow central station at 5.30 to go to Lydia's house and film a few scenes from our opening title sequence. The first issue we had was how to use the lightning. We wanted the scenes to be eerie and did not want the light on however the lightning we had was not very good as it was only one. It took us a while to set everything up and start filming. The group kept disagreeing on certain things and we had to retake a few times. We were also missing one member of the group so that also held us slightly back. The Mise en scene was also not very good so we decided to pack up and redo the entire thing another time. We also had the issue of who was to return the equipment at 9 the following day as none of us had any lessons at that time. We are currently going to film that scene again on Monday 15th March and then another few scenes in Epping forest on Saturday, 20th March.

Location shots

Here are a few examples of the locations we will be using. I did not take these pictures myself, but the forest pictures are actually of Epping Forest; where we plan to shoot. The following picture, however, is just how we would like the room to look, and mise en scene will play a big part in helping us do this. We will use candles, scarves, carpets, a table and some chairs to help make the room look like a genuine fortune teller's room. We will film these shots in Reem's room.

Epping Forest is the only other location we will use. We originally planned to film this at around dusk; but have come to the conclusion that we would never be able to film the whole scene in the amount of time it takes for the sun to go down. Also, there may not have been enough light, even with extra lighting the figures may have been too dark.
