Analysis of nine shots from Art of the Title Sequence; Fight Club
Published Monday, 22 February 2010 by CANDIMEDIA in Lydia AlldrittThese are the opening titles to the film Fight Club. It is mostly dark, but every time the names come on the screen it flashes, like an electrical impulse in the brain, which is where it is set. We see the camera go along tubes and down tunnels, eventually seeing hair follicles and beads of sweat, showing that it is a person; more specifically a man. The camera then carries on tracking backwards and down a black tube, ending on a gun's sight, where the barrel goes into the man's mouth. This is a very violent opening to the film, and will hook the viewer straight away as we are thrown into the story half way through. The titles are very fast and always moving, with the words flashing up bright white and then fading into the background before another set comes up. This is very well done, as it leaves the viewer deliberating over what is on the screen right until the end of the sequence.
